Seeds of Renaissance: design system plan

A working plan for turning the Direction E mockup into a full brand design system. Update the status column as we go.

Approach: start from the mockup

We're happy with the mockup, so we treat it as the source and extract the system from it rather than designing a new one.

  1. Name the feel. Every colour and layout decision is judged against it, not against taste.
  2. Give colours roles, not just hex codes. The system says what each colour does.
  3. Test it outside the website. YouTube thumbnail, slides and print each break something the website doesn't.
  4. Fix what breaks, then write the rules down.

Step 1: the feel (in progress, draft 2)

Essence

Grounded hope. (decided 2026-10-01; option B)

The doula (a skilled, caring presence at birth and at death) is a strong candidate for the brand's guiding image. Still open.

Three supporting notes

  1. Deep sourcing. Going to the source, and the creativity and generativity that come from there. Depth with the aim of really understanding.
  2. Crafted rigour. Real thought, love and care in how things are made; truthfulness rather than being right. The elegance of a well-made potter's bowl, not of Vogue.
  3. Liminal integration. Not opposites held side by side, but the moment they become one: dawn, where darkness and light meet; birth; death. Crisis and renaissance as one transition.

Character

A little off-centre. Earthy, a bit muddy, a bit quirky, a bit marginal. Not mainstream, but not a wild artist's site either. Polyamine already has this: elegant but too quirky for a luxury brand.

Answers so far (2026-10-01)

  • Light: dawn-leaning. We are about renaissance more than hospicing an ending, though we do both. We are doulas of birth and death.
  • Where the "muddy" shows: texture and imperfection. Not muddy colour or raw imagery as the main carrier.
  • Rigour and warmth: rigour first, then warmth, but both always present. Pages vary: movement and community pages lean warm; white papers lean rigorous. Even warm pages need the careful thinking underneath.
  • Images: the sunrise painting is the clearest "age of Aquarius" problem, even though it's a nice painting.
  • Essence: Grounded hope (option B).

Working through: the essence

Triangulating from references: the sunrise painting is hope without ground; Dark Mountain is ground without much hope (its subject is an ending); Emergence is depth, but sleek and nature-mystical. Seeds sits where hope is earned by going through the dark, which is what a doula does.

Candidate essences:

  • A. Authentic, grounded hope (current). Risk: "authentic" is claimed by every brand, so it does little work.
  • B. Grounded hope. The same idea, shorter. Hope stays the destination; "grounded" separates it from the sunrise painting.
  • C. Clear-eyed hope. Puts rigour first (seeing clearly, including the dark), then hope.
  • D. Doulas of a renaissance. A role rather than a quality: skilled, caring presence at a birth, and at a death.

Decision: B, Grounded hope.

Working through: rigour and warmth

The potter's bowl model: rigour is the form, warmth is the surface. Rigour is the constant frame on every page: grid, type, accuracy, sourcing, care. Warmth is a layer that varies: people, texture, hand marks, colour, voice.

Three registers on one skeleton (draft):

RegisterPagesFeel
StudyWhite papers, essays, researchRigour dominant; warmth in small touches
ConversationManifesto, podcast, magazine, landing pageBalanced
GatheringCommunity, events, joiningWarmth dominant; rigour stays in the structure

Logo (proposed)

A black swallow in a radiating circle of red fingerprints. Its red came from the original ink handprints and can be adjusted; it works on different grounds, including inverted on black. Its colours are not necessarily the site palette. Full notes and the four issues to fix: logo.md.

What it is not

  • Spiritual woo-woo or new age ("the age of Aquarius"). The current sunrise painting already leans this way.
  • Luxury-clean, glossy or fashion-elegant.
  • Corporate or mainstream.
  • Chaotic or self-indulgent like many artist websites.

Underlying all of this: integration of mind and body. Intellectual rigour together with things you can touch and hold.

Retired words

Ambitious, elegant (as a primary quality), mature, restraint, and "holding opposites together" (replaced by integration).

Earlier drafts (for reference)

Draft 1 used the mountain and swallow pairs: groundedness, rigour, depth, night, winter, weight and mystery against lightness, joy, community, dawn, spring, movement and announcement. Other pairs: yin and yang, masculine and feminine, complexity and coexisting layers. Draft 1's design translations (for example "hope = gold, dawn imagery") led to the Night to Dawn mockup, which didn't work.

Reference study: Dark Mountain and Emergence (2026-10-01)

Detailed studies: references/dark-mountain.md and references/emergence.md.

  • Dark Mountain (liked): handmade, literary, almost monochrome. Paper grain, torn ink edges between dark and light sections, printmaking imagery, one serif. Grounded and serious, but about endings and short on warmth.
  • Emergence (close, not quite): spare and white with a strong editorial voice and visible structure (Read / Listen / Watch). Sleek, near-luxury, nature-mystical, no hand or texture.

What this suggests for Seeds (hypotheses to test)

  1. The hand is our texture: paper, ink, printmaking, and the logo's fingerprints. This is where "a bit muddy" lives.
  2. Images: favour engraving, printmaking, drawing and honest photography over glowing paintings. The Doré engravings fit; the sunrise painting doesn't.
  3. Thresholds are material (torn paper, ink edges), not digital gradients.
  4. Colour mostly ink and paper, with colour coming from images and at most one living accent. Whether that accent relates to the logo's red is open.
  5. Rigour through visible structure, like Emergence's Read / Listen / Watch, in a calm grid.

Step 2: colour

Emotional tones (reference for feeling only, not a colour spec; colours are designed from the feel):

ToneMeaningProposed role
WhiteOpenness, purity, silence, birth, clarity, possibilityGround: the page
BlackMystery, the unknown, sharpnessInk: text, rules, precision
Deep blueDepth, introspection, rigour, contemplation, myth, wisdom, calmDepth: dark fields, reflective sections, dark mode
RedBlood, vitality, lineage, ritual, action, passion, renewalAction: calls to action, moments of ritual and community
GoldIllumination, sacredness, transformation, sun, hopeGrace: thresholds and rare highlights

Guiding principle: pigments, not screen colours. Use the materials of illuminated manuscripts and Renaissance painting: lapis, vermilion, gold leaf, vellum, lamp-black. They're muted, earthy and have weight. A bright digital blue (#1F338A) was tried as a call-to-action colour and rejected: too cool, too corporate, and blue is the contemplative colour, not the action one.

Alchemical link: the four stages of the alchemical work are nigredo (black), albedo (white), citrinitas (gold) and rubedo (red). They match four of our five tones, with blue as the night sky over them.

Roles to define, for each of three modes (light, dark, on image)

Proportion (draft): roughly 60% ground, 30% ink/depth, under 10% accent, calls to action rare.

Step 3: layout and rhythm

  • Pages follow a day cycle. Sections alternate night (depth: myth, essays, reflection) and dawn (openness: community, gatherings, joining).
  • Gold sits at the threshold between dark and light: horizon lines, dawn gradients, a single lit word.
  • Weight and lift. Heavy elements sit low on a horizon; light elements float with space.
  • Image pairing. Mystical art (eclipse, moon, engravings) next to real people outdoors.

Step 4: type (mostly done)

  • Headings, titles, wordmark: Polyamine (the mountain: carved, weighty).
  • Body: Bricolage Grotesque.
  • Eyebrows, labels, buttons, dates: Appful Grotesque, small uppercase, wide spacing (the swallow: light, in flight).
  • Restora: kept for places where Polyamine doesn't work. Open: define where exactly.
  • Open: a type scale (sizes for each level, on web, slides and print).

Step 5: imagery

Open: the mix of art history and photography, cropping rules, colour grading, when the warm overlay is used, and image sources for mountain, swallow, moon and dawn.

Step 6: mark

The wordmark works. Open: a small square symbol or monogram for avatars and favicons. The mountain and swallow (perhaps with sun or moon) are a strong candidate.

Step 7: test in other contexts

  • YouTube thumbnail: first draft, four templates (gathering, podcast, manifesto, talk): https://claude.ai/artifact/QEUjrhcpFTu5h9xjHP5Hco
  • Slide deck: title, content and quote slides
  • Print: A3 event poster or magazine page (CMYK, paper)
  • Optional: social square post or story

Step 8: write the rules

A brand board page showing colour roles in all three modes, type scale, buttons, links, imagery and the applications above.

Open questions

  1. Is the brand's balance more night or more dawn, and how much darkness does it hold?
  2. How loud is the red allowed to be (elegant against ambitious)?
  3. Does plum stay as the bridge colour, or retire?
  4. Do the magazine, podcast, courses and gardens get their own colours, or is it one palette?
  5. Do we need a symbol, and is mountain plus swallow the right one?
  6. What will actually be printed, and on what paper and budget?

Decision log

DateDecision
before 2026-10-01Direction E (Warm Emergence) chosen; Polyamine is the heading font, Restora kept in reserve
2026-10-01#1F338A rejected as call-to-action colour (too cool and corporate; blue is for depth, not action)
2026-10-01Brand feel: authentic, grounded hope, built on polarity and integration (mountain and swallow, night and dawn)
2026-10-01The pasted colour list (blue, red, gold, white, black) is for feeling only; colours are designed from the feel, not from that list
2026-10-01Night to Dawn judged not working (some ideas worth keeping); stepped back to nail the feel first
2026-10-01Feel draft 2: essence plus deep sourcing, crafted rigour, liminal integration; character "a little off-centre"; references added
2026-10-01Essence decided: Grounded hope. Logo (swallow in fingerprints) recorded; Dark Mountain and Emergence studied
2026-10-01Logo red is from the original handprints and adjustable; logo colours are not assumed to be the site palette
2026-10-02Direction E v7: full-screen hero with the original centred header as an option. Woodcut set in ../system/woodcuts/ (mountains, swallows, leaves, wind, fruits, people in a circle) with a gallery. Fixed swapped photos (field.jpg is the scrolls, sylvie.jpg the woman in the field)
2026-10-02Woodcut seeds added as graphic elements (sunflower, bean, maple key, acorn, pumpkin, stone, wheat, dandelion; spiral, scatter and row clusters). Direction E page rebuilt in the current system (v6)
2026-10-01Pale yellow (#fbefc4) is a background colour only. No bright yellow, no yellow highlighting. Woodcut swallow added as a graphic element (seal, flock, divider). Logo shown as a white disc or square tile works well
2026-10-01Feedback: the system has depth and rigour but lacks joy and poetry; black, white and red read as Japanese Zen. Trying a sunlight yellow (from the mood board field, not the Life Itself yellow) as light only, drawn swallows and suns, more people, a soft italic poetic voice
2026-10-01Buttons are black. The logo red (#E5201C) is used only for occasional links in running text. Some sections sit on pure white
2026-10-01Feedback on ink and paper v1: torn edge works; too dark overall, too many black-and-white images, needs more white and more joy. v2: near-white paper, softer grain, original photos back, one dark section only
2026-10-01Ink and paper mockups built: A (no interface colour) and B (one process ink: red, Prussian blue or gold)
2026-10-01First Night to Dawn build: mountain night, limestone dawn, first light (apricot) for hope and action on night, plum kept for action on dawn

Next step

Done (v5 of the mockup): Night to Dawn built, with Palette (Warm Emergence / Night to Dawn) and Balance (More night / More dawn) toggles. Now: review it and decide the balance and whether first light and plum are right.

Original plan: build "Night to Dawn" on the existing home and manifesto pages: pigment palette, alternating day-cycle sections, gold at thresholds, vermilion calls to action. Add one toggle, more night against more dawn, to settle open question 1.
